Flood warning for south, southeast as rain alert issued

A Status Orange rain warning has been issued for Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow from tonight until tomorrow night.

Met Éireann said: “Heavy rain on Tuesday night, Wednesday and Wednesday night with the possibility of thundery downpours, will lead to localised flooding. Disruption is likely.”

The warning comes into effect at 10pm tonight until midnight on Thursday.

Meteorologist Linda Hughes said that a large low pressure in the Atlantic will cause heavy rain and thundery downpours.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, she said this would come in two stages.

“We’re going to see the first rain move into the southwest at around 9pm tonight and that’s going to move north-eastwards across the country tonight and into tomorrow morning.

“That’s going to linger in parts of the east and northeast into tomorrow afternoon as well.

“There is another spell of rain to follow that’s going to move in to the southwest and south around 3pm tomorrow afternoon, and again that’s going to move northwards right across the country”.

A Status Yellow warning is in place for Carlow, Kilkenny and Tipperary from 10pm tonight until 10pm tomorrow night.

A separate Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for Cavan, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare, Louth and Meath.

It comes into effect at 4am tomorrow and will stay in place until midnight.

A Small Craft warning for all coasts of Ireland has been in place since 6am this morning, with southeast to east winds forecast to reach force six or higher at times.

The marine warning remains in place until 6am Thursday.

The Road Safety Authority has asked road users to exercise caution during the weather warning, and to check local traffic and weather conditions before setting out on a journey.

The RSA warned drivers about reduced visibility, keeping a safe distance between yourself and the car in front of you, as well as not driving through a flooded road that may be deeper than expected.

For pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, the RSA advised wearing high visibility clothing at all times.
