Democrats win Nevada and retain control of the Senate

In the United States, the Democratic Party has held on to control of the Senate after it retained its seat in Nevada in a very close race.

The Democrats’ Senate leader Chuck Schumer said the result was a vindication of the party’s record in government, and a rejection of what he called “MAGA Republican extremism”.

Wins for the Democrats in Nevada and Arizona brought the Party’s total to 50 of the 100 Senate seats.

With the Casting vote of US vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrats retain control of the upper house, even if they lose a runoff election in Georgia next month.

It was the most marginal of the Democrats seats going into these midterm elections, but the incumbent Senator Cortez Masto pulled ahead of Republican challenger Adam Laxalt in a very close contest.

Earlier Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a former astronaut, retained his seat.

What we learned from the US mid-term elections

Losing the Senate, and a projected narrow win in the House of Representatives, has sparked bitter recriminations in the Republican Party, with many party activists blaming former President Donald Trump for the party’s underperformance.

Mr Trump is due to make an announcement about his candidacy for the next Presidential election on Tuesday.

However, the Republicans remain on course to regain control of the 435-seat House of Representatives, though by a far tighter margin than had been predicted.

NBC News, is projecting the Republicans will secure 219 seats in the House against 216 for the Democrats.

It could take several days or more before the outcome in the House is known.
