Social housing will be used for shared accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness under a new Government strategy to tackle the issue.
Around 17% of people accessing emergency accommodation were aged between 18-24, according to the latest monthly homelessness report.
Today, the Government will announce a new National Youth Homeless Strategy – the first in two decades.
The Department of Housing initiative aims to prevent young people from entering homelessness, to improve the experiences of those who are accessing emergency accommodation and to successfully help young people exit homelessness.
Targeted information campaigns on housing supports will be aimed at young people.
The strategy will also identify those within the 18-24 age group who are particularly at risk, including those leaving care and members of the Traveller community.
Another element will be to enhance connectivity between local authorities and Tusla to ensure appropriate supports are provided.
Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien will also seek approval for an additional €60m funding for the Waterford North Quays Public Infrastructure Project.
This is on top of the €110m already announced.
The Cabinet will also consider the third implementation report of the Action Plan for Insurance Reform which was originally published in December 2020.
The report shows that around 90% of the actions have been completed or ongoing.
These include giving effect to the personal injury guidelines and enacting legislation to strengthen the laws on perjury.
In addition, the Office to Promote Competition in the insurance market has been established along with the Insurance Fraud Coordination Office.
Further actions due to be completed this year include legislation to reform occupiers’ liability and reform of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board.
The Cabinet is also set to approve an additional €30m in funding for Ukraine and Moldova.
Ukraine is set to receive €25m and Moldova will be allocated the remaining €5m.
The request for more humanitarian aid will be brought by Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.
