Independent TD to support Minister in confidence vote

The Coalition has received a boost ahead of a confidence vote in the Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien as Independent TD Matt Shanahan has said he intends to support the Government.

In a statement to RTÉ News, Mr Shanahan said housing problems had arisen over decades and two years were not enough time to turn the situation around.

He said he commended the Minister and recent housing data showed that progress was being made.

Next Tuesday the Dáil will hold a confidence vote in Minister O’Brien after People Before Profit-Solidarity tabled a no confidence motion.

The party said that homelessness and the housing crisis had reached “breaking point” and there needed to be a change in minister and a change in policies.

However, Matt Shanahan said the “Dáil’s legislative programme is backed up and this motion is a distraction”.

He added targeting the person who was trying to address the crisis was a “mistake and a waste of Dáil time.”

“I don’t believe anyone occupies the high moral ground in this vote – all I see are parties that refuse to engage purposefully with commercial house builders in an attempt to fully understand their delivery obstacles.”

The support of Matt Shanahan will put the Government in a stronger position ahead of the vote.

Marc MacSharry recently left Fianna Fail and is now an independent. However, two Green Party TDs recently rejoined the parliamentary party.

Fine Gael’s Joe McHugh lost the party whip but is expected to support the coalition.
