US President Joe Biden has said that U2’s music is a bridge between Ireland and America and described the countries as two friends, linked in memory and imagination.
President Biden was speaking at a White House reception ahead of the Kennedy Center’s Honours which recognises stars from music, stage and screen for their contribution to American culture.
This year’s recipients are actor George Clooney, singer-songwriter Amy Grant, singer Gladys Knight, composer Tania Leon and U2.
Mr Biden said the four members of U2 were inheritors of the Irish tradition of poetry and protest and had a belief in the dignity of all people and he quoted lead singer Bono as saying “music can change the world because it can change people”.
He said that for more than 40 years U2 has changed the world and continued to do so.
President Biden added: “From this Irish-American President in a White House designed by Irish hands I want to thank U2 for all you have done, you really make a difference.”
