Biden’s Irish visit to begin in Belfast on 11 April

US President Joe Biden is set to begin a five-day visit to the island of Ireland in Belfast on 11 April.

He will arrive in Dublin the following day and will depart on 15 April.

During his visit, Mr Biden will meet President Michael D Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin.

The Taoiseach will host a reception for him at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

Mr Biden is expected to visit both Louth and Mayo where his ancestors hail from.

His great-great-grandfather Owen Finnegan emigrated to the US from the Cooley peninsula, while another great-great-grandfather, Patrick Blewitt, was born in Ballina, leaving in 1850 to sail to America.

There is a possibility that the Louth visit will take place when he is travelling from Belfast to Dublin, but this has not been confirmed.

If Mr Biden is to make a public address with large crowds present it is likely to happen in the west of Ireland, Government sources have indicated.

The US President will be based in Dublin from 12-15 April and will make day trips to other parts of the country, it is understood.

Those working on coordinating the visit believe it will not be crammed packed with events and it is likely Mr Biden will attend no more than three events each day.

It is not planned to have a joint sitting of the Oireachtas for this visit, which is classed as an “official” visit rather than a more ceremonial State one.

Stormont address could be part of visit

It is understood that one of the events being considered for President Biden’s Belfast itinerary is a speech at Stormont’s Parliament’s Buildings.

The Assembly is not sitting at the minute due to the DUP’s boycott of power-sharing as part of its campaign against the Northern Ireland Protocol.

But it is thought that Speaker Alex Maskey could invite the 90 MLAs to hear a presidential address.

Details of his itinerary in Northern are expected to be firmed up next week.

The presidential visit to the island will have a strong focus on the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Former US president Bill Clinton and his wife and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton will be in Belfast the week after Mr Biden for more events to commemorate the landmark accord.
