Joe Biden address to the Oireachtas ‘being examined’

US President Joe Biden could address a joint sitting of the Houses of the Oireachtas during his 5-day visit to Ireland.

It is understood that the possibility of such an address is “being examined”, and “seems likely”, although nothing has been confirmed.

Three previous US Presidents have addressed the Oireachtas: John F Kennedy in 1963; Ronald Regan in 1984; and Bill Clinton in 1995.

President Biden’s three predecessors visited Ireland while in office – George W Bush in 2004, Barak Obama in 2011, and Donald Trump in 2019 – but did not address the Dáil and Seanad.

Last month, President Biden confirmed that he intends to visit Northern Ireland and the Republic to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

It is also expected that he will visit his relatives in counties Louth and Mayo – although the precise itinerary has yet to be confirmed.

Last December, the EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, addressed both Houses of the Oireachtas as part of Ireland’s 50th anniversary of Ireland’s EU accession.

Just last February, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, also addressed the Dáil and Seanad.
