127 people killed at football match in Indonesia

127 people have been killed after a riot broke out at a football match in the island of Java in Indonesia.

Its reported that fans invaded the pitch after the home side, Arema FC, were beaten 3 – 2 by rivals Persebaya Surabaya.

Indonesian police said 127 people had died and 180 injured after a stampede following crowd trouble at the match.

East Java police chief, Nico Afinta, told reporters that supporters from the losing team had invaded the pitch and police had fired tear gas, triggering a stampede and cases of suffocation.

He said that 34 people had died in the stadium and the rest died in hospital.

The Indonesian top league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a week following the match and an investigation had been launched, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said.

Indonesia’s sports Minister, Zainudin Amali, said that authorities would re-evaluate safety at football matches and would consider not allowing spectators in.
