An Irish Goodbye, Dubliner Richard Baneham win Oscars

The Northern Irish comedy-drama An Irish Goodbye has won Best Live Action Short Film and Dubliner Richard Baneham has won his second visual effects Oscar for his work on Avatar: The Way of Water at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The dimension-jumping Everything Everywhere All at Once was the biggest winner on the night with seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Original Screenplay, Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan). Michelle Yeoh’s win saw her become the first Asian to win Best Actress.

Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, which had been nominated in nine categories, went home empty-handed.

The history-making Irish box office hit An Cailín Ciúin lost out on Best International Feature Film to the favourite, All Quiet on the Western Front – one of four Oscars for the anti-war film.

Avatar: The Way of Water‘s Richard Baneham began his acceptance speech at the Dolby Theatre by saying: “Go raibh maith agat.” The Tallaght man won his first Oscar in 2010 for his work on the original Avatar.

An Irish Goodbye‘s writer-directors, Tom Berkeley and Ross White, were joined onstage by stars James Martin and Séamus O’Hara as they accepted their Oscar.

The filmmakers led the audience at the Dolby Theatre in singing happy birthday to James, who turned 31 on Sunday.

“This award is actually the second most important thing about today because it is this man’s birthday,” said Tom Berkeley.

“He is out here in Hollywood wearing a leopard print suit jacket. We would love to use the rest of our time up here to sing for James.”

Director Ross White described James as “the beating heart of our film” backstage in the winners’ room.

He told the PA news agency: “We just wanted to make sure he had an extra special moment, so it was amazing to have everyone singing for him at the Dolby Theatre – how ridiculous!”

An Irish Goodbye is available to watch on the RTÉ Player.

In the Best Actor category, which included The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Colin Farrell and Aftersun‘s Paul Mescal among the nominees, The Whale‘s Brendan Fraser took home the Oscar.

Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively – the categories in which The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan were nominated.

Dubliner Jonathan Redmond, who had been nominated in the Editing category for his work on Elvis, saw the award go to Everything Everywhere All at Once editor Paul Rogers.

Irish spirits on the night were best summed up by The Banshees of Inisherin star Brendan Gleeson on the champagne carpet before the ceremony: “Nobody’s going to believe me when I say it, but I’ve just taken joy out of this. It’s a historic occasion, it’s a cinematic story that’s ours that works in a cinematic town and all over the world. There’s no downside to it. If we win anything, it’d be brilliant – but it doesn’t really matter that much.”

The 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player on Monday from 9:30pm.
