Detectives investigating the attempted murder of a senior PSNI officer last month have released a man following questioning over a dissident republican claim of responsibility for the attack.
The so-called New IRA said it carried out the gun attack on Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell at a sports complex in Omagh on 22 February.
He was shot several times after taking an underage football coaching session. He remains critically ill.
The New IRA claimed responsibility in a typed message pasted to the wall of a row of shops in Co Derry.
Police said they arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with that claim following the search of a property in the city.
He was also questioned about a hoax device that was left outside the Brandywell Football Ground last month.
It was the venue for the President’s Cup, a match involving Derry City and Shamrock Rovers, which was attended by both President Michael D Higgins and Northern Secretary Chris Heaton Harris.
The man was taken to Musgrave Street Serious Crime Suite in Belfast for questioning yesterday.
However, the PSNI said this evening that the man has since been released.
Eight other men arrested in connection with the attempted murder of Mr Caldwell have been released after questioning.
The investigation continues.
