Abbey Theatre commemorative event marks GFA anniversary

The Government has marked the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement with a commemorative event, that included contributions from poets, musicians, and writers.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said it was right to pause and remember the decisive steps taken towards peace a quarter of a century ago.

This evening’s commemoration at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin featured artists and writers from both sides of the border and beyond.

Co Armagh poet Paul Muldoon spoke at the event and there was music from traditional music legends Clannad, amongst others.

The Taoiseach said the Good Friday Agreement created a better future for people on these islands, something which for so long had seemed like such an impossible aspiration.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin said the evening showcased the rich diversity of values and identities, which had found an accommodation in the historic accord a quarter of a century ago.

There will be comprehensive coverage across all RTÉ platforms all next week as the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement approaches.
